Boehner lies about Job Creation for political gain

Did anyone catch Boehner reading from a teleprompter on Friday? After fighting every single jobs creation measure proposed by Congress and the White House, killing some and watering down others, the House minority leader used the very last monthly jobs report that we will receive before the election, to slam the President Obama for… wait for it…. failing to create jobs. Yep, that’s right, the same job creation that republicans fought every step of the way for political gain, and has lead to millions of Americans out of work and struggling to survive.

Here’s just some of the lies Boehner said during his press conference:

“This morning we got the National Jobs Report from the Department of Labor. It looks a lot like the reports we’ve seen every month since President Obama signed the stimulus spending bill into law. Unemployment is high, millions of Americans are out of work, and private sector job creation remains flat. That’s what you got for your $780 billion dollars worth of spending. High unemployment, bigger government, and an economy struggling to create jobs. The upcoming election is a referendum. As Americans we have to decide: do we want another 2 years of job killing policies coming out of Washington? Or have we had enough?”

Here are the actual facts from the National Jobs Report released by the Department of Labor:
  • In the month of September our economy gained 64,000 jobs in the private sector.
  • September marks the 9th straight month of private sector job growth., more than 850k private sector jobs gained this year.
  • During the first two months after Obama took office, before the stimulus was signed at the end of February ’09, nearly 1.6 million jobs were lost just in those two months.
  • September, however, still had a net job loss of 95,000 fueled by the end of temporary census jobs and from layoff in state and local government as we are approaching the end of the stimulus’s 2 year run.
  • These state and local layoffs of teacher, fire fighters and police officers would have been acerbated if it weren’t for the federal aid that has been provided over the last 20 months; help that the Republicans in Congress have consistently opposed.
  • In other words the public sector got even smaller and is now offsetting the increasing growth in the private sector.

So basically, everything Boehner said was a lie. Private sector job creation is flat? Lie. Bigger government? Lie. It is incomprehensible that Boehner could even have the cojones to mention jobs considering these facts from before Obama took office:
  • After 8 years of the Bush administration over 8 million private sector jobs were lost
  • After 8 years of the Bush administration over 5 million good paying manufacturing jobs lost
  • The deregulation policies under the Bush administration brought us the worst financial crisis we’ve had since the great depression.
  • $2.7 Trillion in tax income was eliminated by the 2003 tax cuts for the rich.

And Boehner insists government spending kills jobs. Yet, what has consistently been the best way to add jobs during a recession? As history has shown us time and time again, the best way is from government spending on infrastructure! Works every time. Not only does rebuilding our infrastructure improve our roads, bridges, rail systems, water systems, etc, making them more safe all the while improving the economy by allowing businesses to operate more effectively and efficiently, putting people back to work, and keeping us at pace with the rest of the world. Infrastructure is the best deal in the economy right now. The construction industry has had the largest job losses of any other industry because of the housing sector collapse. Raw materials, concrete, steel & wood are incredibly cheap right now, and it’s cheap for the government to borrow, so right now the best thing we could do is invest in infrastructure and we will never gain have this good an opportunity to do so. So, naturally, the republicans in Congress oppose this every step of the way, while still showing up at photo ops to accept the federal money.

Why? Well, besides their lack of education and basic understanding of history and economics, they argue that you just can’t borrow and spend your way out of a recession, which they’ve been saying now for two years ever since the start of their recession. Unfortunately it just simply doesn’t work that way. In an economy you have three people who can spend; one is the consumers, one is businesses, and one is the government. Now if you have a massive financial crisis where consumers can no longer spend, and businesses can no longer spend, if the government steps back too and there is nobody left to buy anything. And if there is nobody left to buy anything then businesses can’t employ anyone, that means no money goes to the consumers and neither businesses nor consumers can get back into spending. Econ 101. Now then is the time for government to step up and spend in order for the other two to get back on their feet. But since the Republicans have done such a great job of obstruction every piece of job creation stimulus spending bill, we are seeing the consequences. Essentially the GOP’s mantra of small government is destroying the recovery which is great for the Party Firsters, but terrible for the Country and all of us.
